DHC-2 BEAVER PROCEDURES (FLOATS)

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

[ ] Exterior inspection
[ ] Check fuel quantities
[ ] Fuel tank selector to fullest tank
[ ] Set altimeter and clock
[ ] Propeller lever to full Decrease RPM
[ ] Carb heat to Cold

ENGINE START and RUN UP

[ ] Propeller area clear
[ ] Mixture lever to 3/4 Rich
[ ] Throttle lever 1/4 to 1/2 in. open
[ ] Battery Master Switch ON
[ ] Fuel Boost Pump ON, observe fuel pressure 5 to 7 psi.
[ ] Engine Primer 4 strokes
[ ] Both magneto switches ON
[ ] Starter switch UP, release when engine starts
[ ] Throttle lever to 500/800 RPM
[ ] At 50 psi oil pressure set Propeller lever to full Increase RPM
[ ] Fuel Boost Pump OFF

[ ] Throttle lever to 1000 RPM
[ ] Oil temperature to 40 deg
[ ] Throttle lever to 1200 RPM
[ ] Mixture lever to Full Rich
[ ] Check all fuel tank feeds
[ ] Magneto checks at 1750 RPM
[ ] Check engine gauges are within range
[ ] Throttle lever to 500/800 RPM

BEFORE TAKEOFF

[ ] All doors secured
[ ] Flight Controls Free and Correct
[ ] Trim as required for load
[ ] Mixture lever to Full Rich
[ ] Cycle Propeller lever to Increase, Decrease, Increase RPM
[ ] Fuel tank selector as desired
[ ] Water Rudders DOWN
[ ] Flaps to takeoff
[ ] Pitot heat ON if required
[ ] Carb heat to Cold
[ ] Instrument check

TAKEOFF

[ ] Cylinder head temp below 230 deg C
[ ] Propeller lever up to full Increase RPM
[ ] Throttle to takeoff power (2300 RPM 36.5 hg.)
[ ] Anticipate tendency of aircraft to swing to the left
[ ] Water Rudders UP at 30-40 mph
[ ] Rotate at 55 to 65 mph, climb at 65 mph
[ ] At safe altitude reduce to climb power (2000/2200 RPM 30/33.5 MP depending on load)
[ ] Allow airspeed to increase to 80 mph and re-trim
[ ] At 500 ft. set flaps to climb and re-trim for approx. 500 fpm.

CRUISE

[ ] Set flaps to cruise
[ ] Throttle to 29.7 Manifold Pressure or less
[ ] Propeller lever to 2000 RPM or less
[ ] Re-trim for level flight
[ ] If possible maintain Carb Air Temp at 4 to 7 deg C

DESCENT

[ ] Reduce airspeed and power as required
[ ] Instrument check

APPROACH

[ ] Fuel tank selector to fullest tank
[ ] Reduce airspeed to 90 mph
[ ] Propeller lever to full Increase RPM
[ ] Mixture lever to Full Rich
[ ] Flaps to LAND or as required
[ ] Carb heat to HOT
[ ] Maintain normal approach speed of 80 mph
[ ] Rate of decent approximately 1000 fpm

LANDING

[ ] Trim as required
[ ] Increase power to decrease rate of decent
[ ] Airspeed 50-55 mph (flaps LAND)
[ ] Level or slightly nose high touchdown
[ ] Hold control column fully back
[ ] Apply brakes and lower water rudders

AFTER LANDING

[ ] Flaps to cruise
[ ] Trim to neutral
[ ] Carb heat to Cold
[ ] Throttle to idle (500 RPM)
[ ] Engine instrument check

____________________________________
SHUTDOWN

[ ] Idle briefly to aid engine cool-down
[ ] Throttle to 1000 RPM
[ ] Propeller lever to full Decrease RPM
[ ] Mixture lever to Idle Cut-Off
[ ] Magnetos off after engine stops
[ ] Battery Master Switch OFF
[ ] Fuel tank selector OFF
[ ] All switches except GEN OFF
